What the Free State Taught Me About Transformation
The Night Everything Collapsed
In 2014, a decade-long business partnership that I had poured everything into fractured. My income disappeared. My identity collapsed. My sense of security, everything I had built my life on, fell away at once.
What followed was years of waiting. Waiting for the phone to ring. Waiting for the right door to open. Waiting for restoration. I stood in my drought and looked at the sky. And the sky remained empty.
But here is what I did not understand then: the drought was not my enemy. It was my teacher.
What the Free State Taught Me
I have lived in the Free State for over twenty years. And this landscape, more than any textbook or training programme, taught me everything I know about transformation.
In the Free State, when drought comes, farmers do not curse the sky. The wise ones stop looking up and start looking down. They drill boreholes. Because they know something most of us forget in our seasons of depletion: the water was never in the sky. It was always beneath their feet.
And when the veld fires sweep across the plains, scorching everything black, the same farmers do not mourn. They know that fire does not destroy what is alive. It only burns what is already dead. And within weeks, beneath the ash, new green growth appears, stronger and more vital than before.
These were not metaphors I borrowed from a book. They were lived realities that became the language of my own transformation. And eventually, they became the foundation of the Fire and Well Transformation Framework.
The Framework: Two Practices, One Life

You are both the obstacle and the breakthrough.

The Fire and Well Transformation Framework is built around a simple but profound insight discovered in the middle of my own drought: you are both the obstacle and the breakthrough.
The limiting beliefs, expired identities, and constraining narratives you are protecting, that is your dead grass. It needs to burn. Not because you are broken, but because those beliefs once served you and no longer do. The fire is not punishment. It is renewal.
And the gifts, wisdom, resilience, and capacity you have been dismissing as irrelevant or insufficient, that is your well. You have been standing on it your entire life. The coaching work is not to give people what they lack. It is to help them recognise what they already possess.
The framework operationalises this through two daily practices:
- The Fire guides clients through a structured five-step process of identifying, tracing, examining, challenging, and replacing limiting beliefs. The morning question is simply: What needs to burn today?
- The Well guides clients through a thorough inventory of existing resources across four dimensions: Personal, Relational, Professional, and Spiritual/Purpose, the deep sense of meaning, calling, and inner anchor that sustains people through adversity. The morning question is: What resource in my well can I access today?
Together, these two practices form the Fire and Well Rhythm, a daily discipline of simultaneously releasing what is limiting and accessing what is sustaining. Not a once-off breakthrough, but a way of life.
Where the Framework Has Been Applied
Since developing the framework, it has been applied across individual coaching, group workshops, and organisational settings.
The Wounded Healer workshop programme applies the framework specifically to helping professionals, including medical staff, social workers, counsellors, educators, and emergency responders, who are experiencing compassion fatigue. These are the people who pour themselves out for others and have forgotten to drill their own well.
Most recently, an adapted version of the framework was delivered to a South African government department in preparation for their strategic planning session, addressing attitude, team cohesion, and burnout prevention within the organisation’s own values framework. The feedback confirmed what has been seen consistently: when people encounter the Fire and Well metaphors, something shifts. Not because the ideas are new, but because they are true in a way people recognise from their own experience.
Why This Matters for Coaches
Every client a coach sits with is standing in some kind of drought. Professionals who are depleted. Leaders who are burned out. Individuals waiting for external circumstances to change before their lives can move forward.
As coaches, we have the privilege of sitting with them in that drought and saying: the water is not in the sky. Let me show you where it is.
The Fire and Well Framework is a distinctly African contribution to the global coaching conversation, rooted in the soil of the Free State, shaped by the wisdom of farmers who drill when others wait. But its message is universal.
Because wherever you are in the world, drought feels the same. And the well is always there.
Stop waiting for rain. Start drilling your well. 🔥💧
